Getting HBO in Canada without having cable

So it all started when I wanted to watch the series “Vinyl” but it was only on HBO and I had long ago got rid of my cable. So I looked into the various options and for the longest time it was a real hassle.

I resisted this issue last fall and saw that I could get HBO through CraveTV. So I signed up and was excited to watch HBO for I think it was $9.95, however after I signed up I realized that now I have CraveTV but now I need to spend an additional $9.95 to get HBO. My initial knee-jerk reaction was this was a ripoff! Then I simmered down and thought I would just get it for a month and then binge watch what I want and then cancel it.

Eight months later I have watched “Vinyl” and absolutely enjoyed it – but I still have CraveTV + HBO and I have still not cancelled it. However every time I go to cancel I look at all the other shows I am getting with HBO and I keep it around. I still see the value in it all but it is definitely something I will keep an eye on.

So the question you may be asking is – how do I actually watch it? First thing you need to do is sign up for CraveTV and to do that you need to subscribe https://www.crave.ca/subscribe#/ and you need to choose the option of “Directly through Crave and get instant access”. Follow all of the steps required (somewhat cumbersome but stick with it). Once your CraveTV account is set up, if you have AppleTV you need to download the app and sign in again. I find they make the sign in process cumbersome and it is annoying that each time you want to use it you have to put in your passcode – but whatever that is the way it works.

Once you have it set up – it works great and you get to watch HBO so my advice is stick with it and put up with the clunky signup/sign in process.
